Mass Made Units.
Studies on Assemblies

The use of solid stone and wood in architecture is a sustainable and durable solution that promotes formal modesty and sober constructive thinking. These natural materials allow for a coherent architecture that can be easily remodeled.

Architecture, Building, CityBuilding materials, Components

The publication, edited by EAST - Laboratory of Elementary Architecture and Studies of Types, EPFL Lausanne, addresses the issue of massive construction in serial and elemental production to meet the need for durable and low-maintenance buildings. It examines various construction methods and solutions as well as the joining of components and the structure of the construction. The aim is to promote responsible approaches to the use of materials and modular elementary systems. The contributions collected in the first part reflect the state of research and experimental building practice - from building materials such as unfired clay bricks, the use of different brick formats to the role of solid building envelopes. The second part of this book presents selected architectural works analyzed by the students of the EAST design studio and offers an instructive overview of the constructive and climatic contexts.

The book is aimed at architects and students and reflects the current state of research and experimental building practice.
