In the 2018 academic year, students researched and developed design strategies with the reuse and dismantling of materials as a central goal. Using an example building, materials were analysed, transformed and 1:1 mock-ups were created. A new approach to planning was tried out with great enthusiasm in a variety of ways - starting with existing materials that should be reused as much as possible in the spirit of the circular economy. Not only is the design process changing, but material procurement and processing are also breaking new ground.
Dismantling, testing the potential, requirements for technical properties and, last but not least, logistics and storage options are much more complex for reused material than for new material, where distribution structures and information flow are provided by the manufacturer or supplier in a customer-oriented manner.
Beautiful pictures, interesting ideas, well thought-out concepts and the documentation of exhibitions, excursions, workplaces and transformations of found materials are shown in these two books, edited by Carola Stabauer and Hannah Aufschnaiter, who organised these courses. Inspiration for the transformation of mass-produced building materials into aesthetic reuse - rebeauty.
The books are available exclusively at the TU Vienna in the office of the Department of Interior Design
