Certification process

Application for Preliminary Assessment

Would you like to have your product assessed and certified according to IBO testing criteria? If so, please complete the application form for the preliminary assessment and submit it to the IBO. Please also consult our General Terms and Conditions and the certification program for the IBO mark of quality.

Preliminary Assessment

You submit the products intended for IBO testing along with the application form for the preliminary assessment. At the same time, please provide us with:

  • safety data sheets for the constituent materials
  • the technical product data sheet
  • the technical approval or the Declaration of Performance for the product.

Based on this information, we conduct a preliminary assessment regarding critical constituents and the conformity of technical product data with the relevant set of criteria.

If the outcome is positive, the IBO prepares a cost estimate for a comprehensive IBO product assessment. If a successful outcome for the IBO product assessment appears unlikely, we will notify you immediately, providing the reasons. This procedure ensures that your financial risk is minimized. You then decide whether to proceed with the IBO product assessment.

Commissioning the IBO Product Assessment

Once the IBO product assessment has been commissioned, you submit the product declaration form along with the necessary evidence of compliance with the testing criteria. We use these documents to verify the product's constituents and calculate its ecological performance indicators. During a site visit to the manufacturing plant, we verify production process data and take samples for the planned material analyses. This visit also offers an opportunity to discuss any questions in person.

Reporting and awarding the mark of quality

In a final report, we evaluate the product composition, ecological performance indicators, the manufacturing plant, and the analysis results. If the assessment result is positive, the product is awarded the IBO quality mark for a period of five years. In the event of a negative decision, the client receives the report along with a corresponding explanation and suggestions for product improvement to facilitate further development in terms of ecology and building biology.

The IBO product assessment takes 3 to 6 months from the time the order is placed. Costs are based on the current fee schedule for IBO product assessments.
