Concrete is a building material that was already in use in ancient times, when early builders discovered that mixing lime with volcanic ash produced a remarkably strong substance. The invention of Portland Cement in the 19th century and the systematic reinforcement of concrete with steel in the 20th century further revolutionised modern construction. However, the enormous carbon footprint and environmental impact of its production have long been the focus of numerous research projects and discussions. This book presents new types of concrete and their impact on climate change. Climate-neutral formulations, such as earth-based ‘concrete’ mixtures, provide a basis for discussion on a new perspective regarding the environmental impact of concrete.
After Concrete
